Special highlights will be presented as part of the European Capital of Culture 2024 – including from the Academy of Ceramics, which will continue the long tradition of Gmunden ceramics in collaboration with artists. Kim Simonsson, an international artist who gives new impetus to ceramic art, takes centre stage.
A strange world opens up before us. With his life-size “Moss People”, visitors to Gmundner Keramik are immersed in a fantastic world inspired by the homeland of Finnish artist Kim Simonsson. Reminiscent of fairy tales, manga films and computer games, his ceramic figures are covered with a moss-like surface that makes them appear both mythical and melancholic. At first glance, the figures appear cute. However, the artist creates a dissonance that lends the figures a special presence and casts a spell over the viewer.
