Anyone expecting classic fashion photography in Elfie Semotan’s exhibition is wrong, because the aim is not to produce even more aesthetic and glamorous images, but to position them differently. Perhaps even to present less perfect, more inaccessible faces, not to propagate elegant movements as a clichéd ideal, but instead to show unusual, inappropriate gestures. Elfie Semotan’s creative freedom in staging fashion campaigns can be seen in the selected works for Liska between 1999 and 2018, as well as in editorials for the magazines Allure, D-Magazine and Madame. The extraordinary backdrops for her fashion photography bear witness to Elfie Semotan’s friendships and collaborations with artists and designers. The long collaboration with fashion designer Helmut Lang unfolds in fragmented, underexposed “backstage” photographs, which give an insight into hurried moments before the catwalk appearance. Throughout the exhibition, curated by Maria Venzl, the audience is invited and challenged to uncover details of fiction and discover parallels between nature, art and the human body.
