29.02.2024 – 05.05.2024
To mark its 20th anniversary, the Albertina is presenting the anniversary exhibition of the renowned Verbund Collection.
The exhibition begins with those artists whose works have been monographically collected in depth in accordance with the maxim ‘depth instead of breadth’, such as Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman, Birgit Jürgenssen and Renate Bertlmann. Cindy Sherman is accompanied by contemporaries such as Martha Wilson and more recent positions such as Aneta Grzeszykowska, who recreated Sherman’s famous Untitled Film Stills in colour. This is followed by works from the feminist avant-garde of the 1970s. For the first time in the history of art, these pioneers succeeded in creating a completely new ‘image of the woman’. The female body freed itself from its centuries-old object status and emerged as a subject, as an actor.
The term ‘feminist avant-garde’ was coined by founding director and curator Gabriele Schor in 2007 to honour the pioneering work of these artists and successfully positioned them in the art historical canon with a ten-year European exhibition tour.
