Hubert Matt founded LABOR XXI in 2021 and has designed a logbook for the laboratory every year since then. In the exhibition, the first three books can be seen for the first time as prototypes. The laboratory deals with artistic work as research work and in this respect attempts to make a contribution to the current issue of artistic research, both in practice and in theoretical work.
The exhibition is the first EXPLORATION of the project. It focuses on the examination of the work with paper and drawing, with the transition from drawings to photography and vice versa. In addition to the graphic and photographic works (each of which uses the drawing as a template or reproduces drawings in the world), the works based on numbers and letters are also on display. Here the artist works with algorithms, quiz programmes and Sudokus. He experiments with forms of data representation, such as the lottery game, and works on pattern formation, i.e. diagrammatic methods.
The relationship between forest (wood) and graphite (stone), which forms the basis of the drawing in several respects – as pencil and paper – is reversed, shifted and dissolved.
