The practice of the Portuguese-Luxembourgish painter, who lives and works in Vienna, revolves around exploring the overlapping relationships between archaic functions within religious iconography, Catholicism and contemporary pop culture.
Macedo’s motifs draw from a wide range of images circulating in contemporary society. These motifs serve as a collage that combines widespread images from social media with iconographic elements from art history. They are juxtaposed with motifs of contemporary pop icons such as revered footballers, film, fashion trends or music.
By merging past and present, Macedo invites viewers to reflect on the interplay between tradition and modernity and to blur the boundaries between religious symbolism and the iconography of pop culture.
