In the Eye of the Storm is the first comprehensive exhibition outside Ukraine to illustrate how international and avant-garde the art movements of modernism – the first half of the 20th century – were in the cultural centres of Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa and Kharkiv. From Art Nouveau to Constructivism, the exhibition tells an eventful and fascinating story of Ukraine’s cultural identity. The modernist movement developed in Ukraine against a complicated socio-political background: the First World War, the revolution of 1917, the subsequent short-lived independence as the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1917-20) and the foundation of Soviet Ukraine. Despite the turmoil, Ukrainian art, literature, theatre and film flourished. The exhibition is a co-operation between the Belvedere, Vienna, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels, and the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in collaboration with the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
