Rudi Klein is known to many as the creator of the “Lochgott”. He shows just how versatile he is with his new series Maskenpflicht, which the cartoonist is presenting at the Lisi Hämmerle Gallery.
These are mainly only marginally treated found objects. They are based on old photographic portraits of people who could sometimes be film stars or “dog-normal” people, a child or even a cat, which he covers with other “small parts” such as a spatula, old textiles, cardboard strips and other mask-like objects. The Viennese artist also collected both the portraits and the frames for them during his constant scouring of second-hand shops and flea markets. These pieces are clearly reminiscent of the obligation to wear masks during the pandemic, but this is more of a coincidence, as the artist emphasizes. The decisive factor is that he doesn’t have to do too much to such works. “You can also create a good picture with very economical means,” is the basic attitude of the Viennese artist.”
