In her works, Azoulay overcomes the limitations of national and masculine representations and opens up paths to a networked Middle East where identities are fluid and complexity is valued. Queendom is a deeply rooted realm from the future, where stories from different times and origins have grown together. The artist uses digital craftsmanship to visualise the afterlife of images and their transformations, highlighting the history of appropriation and the missing links in their geographies of knowledge. The ten panels of Queendom are completed for the first time with the inclusion of the archive of David Storm Rice, a researcher of medieval metal vessels of Islamic art, and the artist’s own archive developed from it.
