Man and woman – this simple division has characterised the order in society for centuries. As soon as we are born, our gender and therefore our role in life is determined.
However, this binary system is by no means natural, but a cultural construct. This system cannot be applied uniformly to the animal world either. How can you categorise a bilateral gynandromorph cardinal, a banana slug where the whole species is hermaphroditic or an intersex deer into male and female?
The exhibition “undefined” deals with the great diversity of non-binary animals and animal species, from insects to fish and birds to mammals. In her spatial installation, Anna-May Moody has the walls covered with such fluid creatures, framed by the comprehensive context of biodiversity.
