The war in Ukraine has changed many things – not at least Russian literature. It should not be forgotten that the vehement discussions, especially in social media, about the imperial legacy of Russian literature have not only been taking place since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The questions asked are familiar: Who is to blame? What should be done? Were Pushkin and Lermontov really just singers of imperial greatness, Dostoevsky and Chekhov just anti-Semites?
14 authors in this year’s Literature in Autumn stand for three generations of contemporary Russian literature. The programmatic title “The Other Russia”, which is to be understood as a question, receives very different answers from them. With readings, discussions and debates by and with Marina Davydova, Michail Eisenberg, Nikolai Epplée, Alexander Etkind, Jelena Fanailowa, Dmitry Glukhovsky, Yuli Gugolev, Viktor Jerofejew, Erich Klein, Anna Narinskaya, Maxim Osipov, Kirill Rogov, Darja Serenko, Olga Skonechnaya, Maria Stepanova.
