Barter plays virtually no role in neoliberal market economies. Many conditions have to be met before an exchange can take place without an intermediary monetary value, which makes it a rather impractical and unprofitable form of trade. Between artists, on the other hand, barter is a relatively established and lively form of trade.
As a sign of mutual appreciation and interest in each other’s artistic work, artworks are exchanged with each other, which after a while can also lead to collections. Each exchange tells its own story, provides insights into networks of universities, exhibition spaces and studio communities and makes it possible to observe new aspects of the artistic practice of the exchangers.
The exhibition “Coincidence of Wants” curated by Leon Hösl and Magdalena Stöger exhibits individual works from these collections and follows two parallel strands: ten artists were invited to propose exchanged works or groups of works from their private collections for the exhibition.
Works by Brishty Alam, Chris Boni, Martin Chramosta, Josef Dabernig, Karoline Dausien, Jennifer Gelardo, I want to become a millionaire – Artist Sheets, Séamus Kealy, Ruth Labak, Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch can be seen.
