Seemingly untouched and idyllic are some spots of nature. But appearances can be deceptive. In truth, such landscapes often have something to hide. An oppressive legacy. There is something that pollutes, poisons, contaminates the landscape, invisible though it may be, but piercing and tormenting. These are places where terrible things happened in the past. Massacres, mass shootings, pogroms, whose nameless victims were usually buried on the spot.
In the exhibition contribution originally curated by Astrid Kury and Heimo Halbrainer for the Steiermark Schau 2021, the historian Heimo Halbrainer and the photographer Christoph Grill explore the concept of contaminated landscapes in Styria coined by Martin Pollack, using the examples of Bretstein, Eisenerz, Peggau and St. Anna am Aigen.
