Based on Yan Pei-Ming’s self-exploration as an artist in the form of self- and family portraits, the Francisco Carolinum shows a tour through the central aspects of his artistic work.
His universal themes are hope and courage, death and sorrow, the critical iconisation of aristocratic or pop-cultural personalities or the examination of key works of European art history and the approach to one’s own mortality.
Since the late 1980s, Yan Pei-Ming has been dealing with social and political themes as well as with his own existentialism in bold brushstrokes and monumental, often monochrome, large-format paintings.
He is now internationally recognized as one of the most successful Chinese artists, whose striking, powerful works have been shown at the Center Pompidou and the Louvre (2009).
