The artistic work of the Austrian artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898 – 1944) is multi-layered and multimedia. The artist, who was murdered by the Nazis at the age of 46, was rediscovered because around 4,000 children’s pictures from her time as an art teacher in the Theresienstadt ghetto camp have survived.
Like many of her generation, Dicker-Brandeis, as a left-wing Jewish artist, did not find her way into the art history of European modernism for a long time. Her work only attracted more attention in the 1990s, but she has never been presented in a solo exhibition in Switzerland.
Based on the holdings of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the Graphic Collection of the ETH Zurich is now closing this gap and is presenting a solo exhibition in Switzerland for the first time, which is supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum Bern.
