The photographer and the graphic artist – The exhibition shows vintage prints from the “Masks” series, which were created in collaboration with the photographer Inge Morath and the graphic artist Saul Steinberg.

The Austrian photographer first visited and portrayed Steinberg in 1959. At that encounter, Steinberg wore a paper mask with a recorded self-portrait. In the exhibition, some of the original masks, which the Museum der Moderne Salzburg received as a gift, can be seen for the first time together with the photographs by Morath, which were taken between 1959 and 1962.

The creative collaboration between Morath and Steinberg has been hailed as one of the most interesting instances of teamwork between a graphic artist and a photographer, and marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Steinberg, who is best known for his cartoons and covers for the magazine The New Yorker, also created a number of diverse characters on paper bags that became famous thanks to Morath’s photographs.en.
