With the exhibition Soleil of Persian Square, Hannah Darabi embarks on a search for the visual identity of the Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles.
The artist gives a face to “Teherangeles” as Los Angeles and the area of surrounding small towns, especially in Orange County, is colloquially called: Cityscapes from the greater Los Angeles area, in which she identifies traces of the Iranian diaspora, portraits of its inhabitants, pop culture artifacts such as cassette covers, song lyrics, screenshots of music videos from the 1980s and 1990s.
Hanna Darabi focuses on a real but also imaginary space, on a pop cultural phenomenon that has formed in opposition to Iranian state doctrine, but is spurned by secular intellectuals as a lower art form.
Last but not least, the artist refers to her own position in the midst of diverse forms of inner and outer emigration.
The exhibition at FOTOHOF takes place in cooperation with the Centre d’art GWINZEGAL, Guingamp/France.
