Wiebke Siem: The maximum Minimum / MdM – Salzburg

19.11. 2022 – 12.03. 2023

The Berlin artist Wiebke Siem has made a name for herself with often bizarre and ironic expansive installations.

She arranges everyday things such as clothing, shoes, bags or toys in oversized objects. Pieces of furniture and often marionette-like figures are used to create psychologically charged, oppressive and humorous installations that raise questions about social role models.

In her artistic work, Siem repeatedly uses a formal language and mode of presentation that refer to the context of ethnological collections. In doing so, she comments on the problematic strategies pursued in the modern age when appropriating non-European art. In addition to motifs borrowed from art and cultural history, the critical examination of the mechanisms of the male-dominated art world plays an important role in Wiebke Siems’ work.

The curatorial team Thorsten Sadowsky and Lena Nievers designed the artist’s first Austrian solo exhibition for the Salzburg Museum der Moderne.
