Samuel Fosso is one of Africa’s leading contemporary photographers. He gave the long tradition of studio photography in Africa a new twist by developing and successively refining an independent form of an explicitly theatrical self-portrait from the mid-1970s. The self-portraits are based on playing with roles, identities and media images, on incarnations of selected heterogeneous characters that are of personal as well as political importance.

With his works, Fosso is able to reveal social codes of body, clothing, accessories, pose and facial expressions in a virtuoso way and playfully thwarts attributions of gender, ethnic origin and social class. A central theme of several groups of works is the complex relationship between Africa and the East and the West since the middle of the 20th century, shaped by postcolonialism and globalization. The personal exhibition at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg sheds light on these political aspects in Fosso’s work, among other things.
