Housing is a basic need. How can today’s residential buildings give this need a social and aesthetic added value that goes beyond pure functional fulfillment within the framework of economic, spatial planning and legal constraints?

The exhibition “More than usual” at the Vorarlberg Architecture Institute deals with this question.

The design quality of the buildings and the spaces in between and open spaces, but also changing living needs hardly play a role in this country. The debate about it, on the other hand, is ubiquitous. This debate deals with the change in household types, observes the advance of the work sphere into private living and addresses individualization and loneliness in society.

New forms of neighborhood, high-quality intermediate spaces and invigorating mixed uses, as well as new or rediscovered flexible floor plan typologies are already being tried out successfully elsewhere.

In Vorarlberg, on the other hand, it is hardly possible to establish more compact forms of living in the area of conflict between privacy and community. The market is dominated by the desire for a single-family house, conventional floor plans in multi-storey residential buildings and a constantly recurring, architecturally impoverished type of small residential complex.

“More than usual” picks up on these topics and calls for “more” in residential construction: more design quality, more space for social participation and interaction, more flexibility of use and openness to new living needs. The exhibition takes a look at the history of housing and the development of typology in Vorarlberg, deals with the all too often neglected field of spaces and transitions and shows successful models of new housing forms and typologies.
