A Playground Guide to Getting Lost
In Styria, a prize for contemporary art was established for the first time in 1959. At that time it was called the “Joanneum Art Prize” and was awarded until 1967 to the great representatives of Styrian modernism.
In 1968 this award was renamed the “Art Prize of the Province of Styria” and from 1983 onwards the “Promotion Prize for Contemporary Fine Art” was awarded to younger artists with an age limit until 1999 when the age limit for the “Promotion Prize” was lifted.
Since then, all artists born in Styria or having their main residence here can participate.
A competition is held in which an art expert with international experience first curates an exhibition from all the works submitted.
The Neue Galerie Graz is now hosting the exhibition curated by Lina Albrikiene (Vilnius) entitled “A Playground Guide to Getting Lost”, which implies three possible interpretations for this exhibition.
Playground represents childhood and the memory of it, past experiences with their emotions, feelings and early certainties. Guide alludes to possible paths and destinations, to uncertainty and help – unavoidable in our lives, especially nowadays. Getting Lost allows for different interpretations depending on how individuals interpret the first two concepts.
It may be that for some a constructive path is indicated that triggers certain memories and thus triggers a wide variety of sensations, such as joy or sadness, comedy or seriousness.
Other visitors* might get lost in their introspection – or find an answer to the hitherto hopeless gloom. In the end, however, it is probably above all the sense of absurdity that will awaken.
In a further stage of competition, prizes and scholarships will be awarded from the positions represented in the exhibition.
The awarding of the prizes will take place within the framework of the Landeskulturpreisverleihung on Wednesday, 26.1.2022 at 18:30 by Landesrat Christopher Drexler.
