Experience the current exhibition Ellen Harvey. The Disappointed Tourist in 360°.
Ellen Harvey is a painter, cartographer, conceptual artist and more. She works with and on everything from classical oil painting, drawing and mirror engraving to sculptural installations and works in public spaces. Humor and spectacle take on an important role in Harvey’s work, and she aims to deliver a critical commentary on the perception of art. She also questions the statement of art as a mirror of society.
“The Disappointed Tourist” is Harvey’s first solo exhibition in Austria. The title is borrowed from one of her series: since 2019, she has been painting places that are presented to her in response to the question “Is there a place you would like to visit (again), but which no longer exists?” Here, Harvey is concerned with locating existential memories. Traumatic experiences such as war, racism and ecological catastrophes play an essential role. But also everyday experiences and losses, whether triggered by technological change or gentrification, are thematized. These can be culturally significant places or simply favorite places, ranging from the recently disappeared to the losses of history.
Proposals are still being accepted for the upcoming exhibition in Salzburg at www.disappointedtourist.org.
