What do communication and collaboration mean in times of lockdown and social distancing?

Based on a virtual 18-month recidency project that brought together artists from 10 countries, who did not know each other beforehand in pairs, the interdisciplinary group exhibition UN/MUTE was created in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum, New York and the gallery undercurrent.

The artists from Europe and New York City, previously unknown to each other, came together in pairs in two online residencies in 2020 and worked with the means at their disposal: digital forms of communication. Video recordings of their conversations and collaborations served as a basis, archive, and inspiration.

What began digitally, abstractly, and online is now revealed in 14 artworks that are analog, sensually experiential, and concrete. The teams were confronted with the parameters of lockdown and each team came up with creative solutions that we can learn from. The common thread running through the sculptures, installations, films, drawings, photographs, and performances is communication.

In the process, the means of language become as visible as its limits.
