A large-scale mural – an open-air frieze, so to speak – can be seen on the exterior façade of the Kunsthalle am Karlsplatz in Vienna. It extends over the entire length of the street-side glass façade of the Kunsthalle Karlsplatz. Short quotations that can be read directly above the work on an LED band simultaneously contextualize and counter the image content.
The assignment to the category of frieze is no coincidence, as it is located in the immediate spatial and also intellectual vicinity of perhaps one of the most popular friezes of the recent Western art tradition: Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze (1902). A remarkable wall work, which consists of a sequence of sometimes surreal scenes and demands a deeper interpretation and examination from the viewer.
