The designforum Steiermark is presenting an exhibition entitled “CNC Century: The Future of Design in Robotic Manufacturing”. Based on the thesis that the robot acts as an extended arm of the craftsman, the question developed as to whether a robot can directly implement the designer’s designs and thus replace the craftsman.
In a semester project, students of the Industrial Design course at FH JOANNEUM have been working on this issue in connection with wood as a material. Wood was examined from the design perspective and research was conducted into which new niches and products for the material can be opened up by machining with CNC milling robots. The expansion of the classic product portfolio of the wood industry through innovative ideas was the main focus.
