28.08.2020 – 06.01.2021.

Belvedere 21 is showing a retrospective of the artist Zbyněk Sekal. Sekal’s minimalist works bear witness to a life marked by isolation, imprisonment and exile. Around seventy of his objects are now on display at Belvedere 21. General Director Stella Rollig: “The Belvedere honors one of the most important artists of the Czech avant-garde with a comprehensive insight into his work. Sekal’s confrontation with restriction, loneliness and isolation seems more topical than ever, especially today – in a mood of upheaval caused by the crisis”. Zbyněk Sekal’s artistic work reflects the biography of a fugitive and seeker, whose experiences give rise to an artistic philosophy and an extremely productive strategy. Influenced by Far Eastern philosophy and surrealist tradition, Sekal creates a work that tells of personal experiences and pays homage to the human being across all religions and cultures. His work includes early paintings, material paintings as well as sculptures made of bronze, stone, plaster and wood.
