The Welz Gallery in Salzburg is showing works by the artist Gabriele Kutschera.
For more than 40 years Gabriele Kutschera has dedicated herself to one technique and one material, the forging of iron. The artist acquired the basics in an old blacksmith’s shop. Forging needs time and patience like any other forming. Every hammer blow brings a change. It is a reduced, rhythmic work, a rhythm of tensioning and letting go. Gabriele Kutschera forges lances, leaf and knot stelae from square rods, using all kinds of techniques: she hits, bends, hammers, turns and splits the iron.
