Invitingly, the hammocks stretched out by Michael Kienzer bob in the wind: since July 10, the Höhenrausch roof has mutated into a „Wolkenkuckucksheim“ and attracts visitors with a range of urban attractions.
Borrowed from Aristophane’s comedy “The Birds”, a Wolkenkuckucksheim is an ancient Greek word for a “city in the clouds”, which is usually built by birds with their nests. It is also a castle in the air or a utopia without any grounding in this context.
The hammocks run through the roof in a colourful and expansive way: the installation “Abhängen” by the Upper Austrian art- ist sets the theme and invites the visitor to linger. No fewer than eleven participating artists are represented with works on the roof of the Upper Austrian cultural quarter: there is, for example, Eva Schlegel’s expansive installation “under the cherry tree” which stages an artificial cherry orchard and plays with printed glass elements and plant arrangements. The soundwalk “Homages” is distributed over the raiffeisen kunst garage and the roof of Passage Linz, 15 bright blue cubes are arranged like street lamps on the Höhenrausch course. Or Clemens Bauder’s and Gregor Graf’s manipulated telescopes that allow different views of the city. They direct the gaze to existing, past and utopian visions of the future.
The roof will also be used for thematic events, with readings, open air cinema and a bar. Every Friday is “Luftschlosslesung”: young authors present selected texts. A public reading room is thus created between heaven and earth on the upper floor of the container bar. Guests include Marko Dinie, Marie Luise Lehner and Tanja Raich.
Finally, art films will be shown on the large open air screen in voestalpine open Space: there will be contributions by James Benning, Candice Breitz, Heidrun Holzfeind and others. Thus a city within the city is created, a utopia and vision built in the clouds. Visitors are very welcome.
