“Wo Kunst geschehen kann” Die frühen Jahre des CalArts / Kunsthaus Graz

(c) Judy Chicago, Orange Atmosphere, 1969 / Kunsthaus Graz

01.07. until 20.09.2020

A group exhibition at the Kunsthaus Graz shows the early years of CalArts (1970-1980), a renowned art school in Los Angeles County. “Wo Kunst geschehen kann” shows in an exemplary way a multi-perspectivist view of the art academy, its teachers and students. Parallel existing art movements such as the environment of conceptual art, Fluxus and feminism are illuminated as well as the school’s radical pedagogical concept. Especially for the exhibition, 13 oral history recordings were produced that give artists a voice.

The exhibition shows works by Michael Asher, John Baldessari, Ericka Beckman, Ross Bleckner, Barbara Bloom, Troy Brauntuch, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, Klaus vom Bruch, Judy Chicago, Eric Fischl, Simone Forti, Jack Goldstein, Douglas Huebler, Stephan von Huene, Allan Kaprow, Mike Kelley, Alison Knowles, Suzanne Lacy, Daniel Joseph Martinez, John Miller, Susan Mogul, Matt Mullican, Ann Noël, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik.
