The Self in the Mirror of the Other. Photographs and Films, 1968 – 2018
Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller, photographer, director and visual artist, stands with her work and the schools for artistic photography and independent film she founded for a fundamental examination of the media of photography and film. The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is dedicating an exhibition to her which builds on the extensive film and photography holdings of the Generali Foundation Collection and the Austrian Federal Photography Collection. The artist supplements the exhibition with works from more recent times (since 2000) that are missing from the collections and that are important for understanding certain groups of works and their artistic development.
Exploration of the psychological force of the portrait
Conceptual photography, avant-garde and experimental filmmaking, feminist art and Freudian psychoanalysis – Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller has been working since the late 1960s on a body of work whose pioneering achievements have widely ramified points of reference to precisely these themes. They unite in the artist’s main interest: the exploration of the psychological force of the portrait.
The artist and trained psychoanalyst is fascinated not by the function of the portrait as an instrument of political stagecraft and media spin, but rather by its ability to facilitate unique encounters with ourselves and others.
