„EXTR-Activism“ Decolonization of space mining at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse.
Export of raw materials and overexploitation in space: Curated by Saskia Vermeylen, the exhibition “EXTR-Activism” presents artistic and activist positions that critically examine the current commercial race for extractivist exploitation in space.
The exhibition is designed as a space-consuming performance through which the visitor moves as if she were on board a pan-African spaceship. In “EXTR-Activism” “Afronauts” are sent into space on a mission to put an end to colonialism and extractivism on the moon and Mars.
Aware of the destruction to mankind and the environment that goes hand in hand with terrestrial resource extraction, Afronauts now have the opportunity to redesign the future.
Among others, works by Nuotama Bodomo, Guy Buttery, Michelle Clarke, Craig Jones, Dylan McGarry, Saskia Vermeylen, Sean McMahon, Stefan Tiron, Pippa Goldschmidt, and many more are on display.
