Capital of Culture lends wings. 10 years of Linz09: Not only the south wing of the Schlossmuseum has lent the city lasting cultural wings.

This summer, the exhibition “10 Years Linz‘09” will take place in the south wing of the Schlossmuseum Linz. What has remained of the project Linz – European Capital of Culture 2009? “First of all there are the cultural buildings and infrastructure investments that would not have been realized in this timefram without Linz09”, says Walter Putschögl, now director of the “Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum” and former finance director of Linz09 GmbH.

New cultural buildings, such as the Musiktheater, the new Ars Electronica Center or the south wing of the Schlossmusem have changed the cultural infrastructure of the city and created space for new cultural programmes and event formats. The year of the European Capital of Culture was a trigger for numerous investments by a wide range of institutions. The “Wissensturm” in the then newly designed Bahnhofsviertel, the modernization of the Oberösterreichische Landesbibliothek, new buildings in the university district were all realized during this time.

“A Capital of Culture project is an important catalyst. It helps to reach decisions in different authorities and institutions in a short time and creates the willingness to coordinate. We still benefit from these networks today”, says Putschögl. An example of this is the co-ordinated cooperation of the Linz museums. The “Museum Total“ project, initiated by Linz09, has created a joint platform of all Linz museums, to coordinate joint program priorities and marketing activities that lasted. Linz Tourismus is closely involved in this cooperation and also acts as a service point for the “Linz Kulturcard” that emerged from the Linz09 Card.

However, the sustainable impulses are not just structural. Today, there are a number of new formats in the cultural program of the city, which were initiated by the Capital- of-Culture-year: The program of the Kepler-Salon Linz has become a fixed point of the socio-political discourse in the city. The Nextcomic Festival brings together the comic and graphic novel community in Linz every year. The Linz Bubble Days or the “Lange Nacht der Bühnen” have their permanent place in the program year. And the exhibition trilogy “Tiefenrausch” – “Schaurausch” – “Höhenrausch”, initiated by Martin Sturm, has become a crowd puller that regularly attracts well over 100,000 visitors. For this year‘s edition “Sinnesrausch”, former Linz09 director Martin Heller returns to the city. Together with Julia Stoff he curated the exhibition project “Wiar a Hünderl sein Herrn”.

If that‘s too much of a cultural offer, one still has the opportunity to retreat to the tower room of the “Linz Mariendom” and lock himself up high for several days high above the city alone in a hermitage: The Linz09 project “Turmeremit” has also survived in the lofty heights of the Dome.
