Unknown works from psychiatric institutions in Switzerland around 1900 – supplemented by works from Austria.
At the Zurich University of the Arts, the works created around 1900 in all cantonal hospitals in Switzerland were recorded for the first time in a unique project. A selection of them can now be seen in an exhibition. Patients created their works with dedication and great technical and artistic competence. They understood it as a contribution to public life, as an invention or expression of their thoughts, as criticism of the institution or enrichment in monotonous everyday life.
The exhibition travels through three institutions and three countries, including the Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg (11.10.2018 – 20.1.2019) and the Kunstmuseum Thun (9.2.-19.5.2019). In the LENTOS Art Museum, the show will be supplemented with works by Austrian patients.
